Milhaud war ein hervorragender Pianist, Vortragender und Komponist. Sein Aufenthalt in den USA spiegelt sich auch in seiner Musik wider, die von amerikanischem Jazz und südamerikanischen Rhythmen geprägt ist. Darius Milhaud erhielt seine musikalische Ausbildung am Konservatorium in Paris. Durch den Ausbruch des 1. Weltkrieges wurde sein Studium unterbrochen und erst später kehrte er wieder nach Paris zurück, wo er eine Gruppe gründete, die "Les Six" genannt wurde. Sie war der Inbegriff von "Vereinfachung der Musik". Sie hatte sich zum Ziel gesteckt, Musik aus den Fängen des Impressionismus zu befreien. Somit hatte Milhaud einen gewaltigen Einfluß auf die französische Musik. Während des zweiten Weltkrieges ging er dann in die USA, wo er als Komponist noch große Arbeiten vollbrachte.

In 1920 Milhaud became known as one of "Les Six", a group of French composers that included, most notably, Poulenc and Honneger. This group rejected the impressionist style, and believed that a simpler approach to form and style was needed. "Les Six" had a profound influence on French music in the 20th century, and Milhaud and Poulenc are recognized as France's most important composers of the period. In 1940 Milhaud emigrated to the United States. After WWII he alternated years between Mills College and the Paris Conservatory, where he tauth until the age of seventy. His music was frequently influenced by American jazz and Brazilian rhythms, and Milhaud used polytonal and polyharmonic devices extensively.
