Seine erste allgemein anerkannte Komposition war die "Sonata for Violin and Piano", die 1964 anläßlich der "Spoleto Festival Competition" den ersten Preis erzielte. Später komponierte er 1975 ein Oboeconcerto, 1977 ein Klarinettenconcerto und 1980 dann die Filmmusik für "Altered States", die dann in eine Konzertsuite mit dem Titel "Three Hallucinations for Orchestra" umgewandelt wurde. Er war am "Chicago Symphony Orchestra" fix als Komponist engagiert, die seine "Symphony No. 1" im Mai 1990 uraufführte. {E} John Corigliano studied composition with Otto Luening at Columbia College, Vittorio Giannini at the Manhattan School of Music, and Paul Creston. He later composed an oboe concerto in 1975, a clarinet concerto in 1977, and the film score for "Altered States" in 1980 which has been condensed into a concert suite entitled "Three Hallucinations for Orchestra".
