John McCabe's zweigleisige Karriere als Komponist und Pianist hat ihn zu einem der führenden britischen Musiker seiner Generation gemacht. Seine gesamten Aufnahmen der vollständigen Piano Sonatas von Haydn (12 CDs) wurde vom Magazin "Gramophone" "als einer der großartigsten Aufnahmemonumente der Keyboard Literatur" ausgezeichnet. Sie verglichen es mit Schnabel's Beethoven Sonatas. Seine große Anzahl von Kompositionen, die weltweit aufgeführt wurden, umfassen die meisten musikalischen Stilrichtungen. Zu seinem erfolgreichsten Werk zählt sicherlich das Ballett "Edward II", dessen Uraufführung in Großbritannien im Oktober 1997 vom "Birmingham Royal Ballet" durchgeführt wurde. John McCabe's dual career as composer and pianist has established him as one of the leading British musicians of his generation. His integral recording on London of the complete Piano Sonatas of Haydn (12 CDs) was greeted by "Gramophone" magazine as "one of the great recorded monuments of the keyboard repertoire", likening it to Schnabel's Beethoven sonatas. His large output of compositions, which have been performed all over the world, cover most of the genres. Among his most successful works are the ballet "Edward II (UK premiere October 1997 by the Birmingham Royal Ballet), the Concerto for Orchestra (Solti/London Philharmonic Orchestra 1983), four symphonies, and a wide range of keyboard, chamber and vocal music. Recent works have included a flute concerto for James Galway and the London Symphony Orchestra, Tenebrae for piano (Barry Douglas) and chamber works for the Verdehr Trio (Fauvel's Rondeaux) and the Raphael Ensemble (Pilgrim for string sextet). In 1985 John McCabe was awarded the CBE for his services to British music.
