Joseph Schwantner wurde am 22. März 1943 in Chicago geboren und arbeitet seit 1970 als Kompositionsprofessor an der "Eastman School of Music" der "University of Rochester". Außerdem arbeitete er auch noch an der "Julliard School" und war von 1987-1888 "Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition" am "Ithaca College", in New York. Schwantner erhielt seine musikalische und akademische Ausbildung am "Chicago Conservatory" und der "Northwestern University", wo er 1968 seinen Doktor machte. Von 1982 bis 1985 fungierte er als fix angestellter Komponist am "Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra", als Teil eines "Meet the Composer/Orchestra Residencies Program", gesponsert von der "Exxon Corporation", der "Rockefeller Foundation" und der "National Endowment for the Arts". Er war auch Thema einer TV-Dokumentation mit dem Titel "Soundings", von "WGBH" in Boston produziert. Seine Arbeit "Magabunda: Four Poems of Agueda Pizarro" wurde von der "Saint Louis Symphony" aufgenommen, wurde 1995 mit einem "Grammy Award" in der Kategorie "Beste, neue klassische Komposition" ausgezeichnet. Joseph Schwantner was born in Chicago on March 22, 1943, and is currently Professor of Composition at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester where he has taught since 1970. He has also served on the faculty of the Julliard School and was the 1987-88 Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition at Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York. Schwantner received his musical and academic training at the Chicago Conservatory and at Northwestern University, where he completed a doctorate in 1968. From 1982 to 1985, Schwantner served as Composer-in-Residence with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as part of the Meet the Composer/Orchestra Residencies Program funded by the Exxon Corporation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has been the subject of a television documentary entitled "Soundings", produced by "WGBH" in Boston for national broadcast. His work "Magabunda: Four Poems of Agueda Pizarro" which was recorded by the Saint Louis Symphony, was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award in the category "Best New Classical Composition", and his "A Sudden Rainbow", also recorded by the Saint Louis Symphony, was nominated for "Best Classical Composition".
