{E} One of the top rank composers of the 90's who shot to fame in the early 80's mainly thanks to his impressive score to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn, Krull and then works like Cocoon which defined his more restrained style of late. Has won two Oscars. One for Best Original Score for Titanic and for the Song My Heart Will Go On, also from Titanic and been nominated a few times before than, most notably for Bravebeart and Apollo 13 in the same year (both of which I felt were a lot more worthy than Titanic.) Has many influences that he takes to an extreme that most film music fans find just a little too much at times. He also tends to recycle his own music in other scores and when this is done with little change, can often spoil the mood by recalling an earlier score. Jerry Goldsmith was a large influence in his earlier work, most notably in the zero budget Corman flick Battle Beyond the Stars which is heavily influenced by Star Trek: The Motion Picture (among other things) . His use of the odd Prokofiev or Tchaikovsky phrase is not unheard of, especially in his scores for animated films which takes the ballet music of those composers in many cases. Having heard much more intense and inspired film music such as Bernard Herrmann, I am perhaps feeling that Horner is perhaps a little tame in comparison. Then again, his scores are always perfectly suited to the film and meld almost seamlessly with the images. It is his earlier scores that I tend to come back to more often as they have more dynamism, inspiration and energy than a lot of his recent efforts. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn stands out as being one of my favourite scores of all time. There have been some excellent scores recently too, most notably Braveheart which gave the film more soul than it could have mustered on its own. His recent action effort to Mask of Zorro was much more inspired and dynamic than anyone dared hope. He is currently on a brief sabbatical to write a ballet, but appears to have his name down to quite a few upcoming films.
