Mark Hindsley, ein 1925 ausgezeichneter Absolvent der Universität von Indiana, diente bis 1929 als Band Direktor und Musiklehrer in Indiana. Von 1929 bis 1934 war er Leiter der Instrumentalmusik in den Schulen von Cleveland Heights, Ohio, wo er die High School Bands und Orchester, Landesbeste in Konzert- und Marschmusik bei nationalen Band Wettbewerben, dirigierte. Von 1934 bis 1948 war er Assistent Direktor von Bands an der Universität von Illinois, Direktor der Marschkapelle „Illini“ , Dirigent der ersten Regimentskapelle und unterrichtete Blasmusik an der Musikschule. Diese Periode wurde durch seinen Militärdienst von 1942 bis 1946 unterbrochen, wo er als Musikstabsoffizier des Army Air Force Trainingskommandos und Orchesterdirigent, sowie Lehrer des Dirigierens an der amerikanischen Universität „Biarritz“ in Frankreich die letzten 6 Monate über, den Rang des Oberstleutnants erlangte und sich die Army Belobigungsmedaille verdiente. 1948 übernahm er, nachfolgend auf Albert Austin Harding, die Stelle als Direktor der Bands in Illinois und verblieb in dieser Position, sowie als Professor der Musik bis zu seiner Pensionierung 1970. Als ehemaliger Präsident der nationalen Vereinigung von College Band Direktoren (1947) sowie des amerikanischen Kapellmeister Verbandes (1957-58) ist Dr. Mark Hindsley in ganz Amerika, sowie in anderen Ländern als Gastdirigent, Experte und Preisrichter und als Gastdozent bei den Sommerkursen vieler Colleges und Universitäten in Erscheinung getreten. Seine Aufnahmen von der Universitätskonzert Band von Illinois und seine Umsetzung von historischen Meisterwerken sind sowohl zu Hause als auch in anderen Ländern hoch gefeiert.

A graduate of Indiana University "with high distinction" in 1925, Mark Hindsley served as band director and music instructor at Indiana until 1929. From 1929 to 1934 he was Director of Instrumental Music in the schools of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, conducting the high school bands and orchestras, with first divisions in concert and marching at national band contests. From 1934 to 1948 he was Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Illinois, director of the Marching Illini and conductor of the First Regimental Band, with wind instrument teaching in the School of Music; this period was interrupted by military service from 1942 to 1946, as staff music officer of the Army Air Forces Training Command, and for the last six months band and orchestra conductor and teacher of conducting at the Biarritz American University in France, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel and earning the Army Commendation Medal. Succeeding Albert Austin Harding as Director of Bands at Illinois in 1948, he was active in that position and as Professor of Music until his retirement in 1970. A past president of both the College Band Directors National Association (1947) and the American Bandmasters Association (1957-58), Dr. Mark Hindsley has appeared throughout the nation and in other countries as guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator, and on the summer staffs of many other colleges and universities. His recordings of the University of Illinois Concert Band and his transcriptions of historical masterpieces are highly acclaimed at home and abroad.
