William Babell wurde um 1690 geboren und starb am 23.09.1723 in Islington (London) im Alter von nur 33 Jahren. Seine musikalische Ausbildung erhielt er von seinem Vater, einem Fagottisten, später von J. Chr. Pepusch und möglicherweise auch von Händel. Er erwarb internationalen ruf als Cembalist. Mattheson berichtet, daß er sogar Händel als Orgelvirtuose übertroffen haben soll. Später betätigte sich Babell als Berufsmusiker in London; er war Geiger, unterrichtete und soll der Privatkapelle Georgs I. angehört haben. Später wirkte er bis zu seinem frühen Tod als Organist in All Hallows in London. Sein gewandtes Cembalospiel war unzweifelhaft durch seine gründliche Kenntnis von Händels Fähigkeiten und Leistungen auf diesem Instrument beeinflußt. Seine Kompositionen für dieses Instrument vermitteln wertvolle Einblicke in die damalige Verzierungs- und Improvisationspraxis.

William Babell was born ca. 1690 and died on 23 September 1723 in Islington (London), only 33 years old. He received his early musical instruction from his father, a bassoonist, later from J. Chr. Pepusch and possibly Handel. He acquired an international reputation as a harpsichordist. Mattheson reported that he as said to have surpassed even Handel as an organist. Later he led an active professional life as a musician in London; he was active as a violinist, gave lessons and was said to have played in the private band of George I. For a number of years until his early death he was organist of All Hallows in London. Babell's keyboard style was undoubtedly influenced by his close acquaintance with Handel's performances on the harpsichord. His harpsichord works give valuable insight into early 18th century practice of ornamentation and extemporization.
