Premiered by the Lone Star Wind Orchestra conducted by Eugene Corporon at the 2012 Midwest Band/Orchestra Clinic.
Ode to R.S. is dedicated to Schumann's 200th birth year. Done in theme and variation form, the melody comes from an original hymn by 16th century French composer Loys Bourgeois. The clarinet section introduces Schumann’s own harmonization of the Figurierter chorale as a beautiful, gentle choir in C major. Five unique variations follow, exploring and teasing with style, sonority and individual expressiveness. The bright conclusion employs a surprise contrapuntal entrance of Schumann’s Traumerei superimposed over the full ensemble’s emphatic restatement of the main chorale.
