András Sebestyén wurde am 6. Februar 1917 in Debrecen geboren. Er studierte Violoncello bei Adolf Schiffer und später bei Jeno Kerpely an der Musikakademie in Budapest. In seiner letzten Klasse studierte er Komposition bei Zoltán Kodály. Zwischen September 1946 und September 1949 war er Dirigent am "Csokonai Theatre" in Debrecen. Zwischen 1949 und 1951 war er Musikdirektor des "Budapest Pioneers' Theatre" und später am "National Theatre". Zwischen 1959 und 1984 war er der "deputy head" der Musikabteilung des ungarischen Senders. In dieser Tätigkeit wurde er immer wieder als Jurymitglied von verschiedenen Wettbewerben, einschließlich dem "Let the Peoples Sing", eingeladen. Ihm wurde der Preis "For the Socialist Culture" verliehen und er wurde mit der "golden Medaille of Labour" geehrt.

András Sebestyén was born on February 6th, 1917 in Debrecen. He studied violoncello with Adolf Schiffer and later with Jeno Kerpely at the Budapest Academy of Music and for composition he had Zoltán Kodály as his master in his last class. Between September 1946 and September 1949 he was conductor of the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen. In 1949-1950 and 1950-1951 he was music director of the Budapest Pioneers' Theatre established right then and of the National Theatre, respectively. In the years between 1959 and 1984 he was deputy head of the Music Division of the Hungarian Broadcast. In this capacity he was repeatedly invited to the board of the jury of several international choir and composers' competitions including "Let the Peoples Sing" organized by the BBC and "Prix Italia" of the Italian Radio (RAI).He was awared the distinction "For the Socialist Culture" and decorated with the golden Medaille of Labour.
