Stephan Foster wurde in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania geboren. Als Komponist war er ein Autodidakt und trotzdem sind seine Lieder weltbekannt geworden. Er war Buchhalter von Beruf und so zählte er bis zum letzten Groschen den er mit seinen Kompositionen verdiente. Seine Erfahrung in der Buchhaltung konnte aber nicht verhindern, daß er Bankrott machte. Er verstarb krank und arm, nur 38 Jahre alt und mit einem "Vermächtnis" von achtunddreißig amerikanischen Cents.

Born in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Stephen Foster was completely self-tought as composer. Nevertheless his compositions became famous all over the world. He started as a professional accountant and never forgot his real profession, always counting up to the last cent whatever he earned with his compositions. Yet, his accounting skills could not prevent him from going bankrupt. He died aged 38 in illness and poverty leaving exactly 38 American cents as "legacy".
