Warren Benson received bachelor's and master'd degrees in music from the University of Michigan, then played timpani with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1945. Self-taught in composition, he is a graduate in theory from the University of Michigan. He was awarded successive Fulbright Teacher Grants to Greece, where he organized the first co-educational choral group in that country. Later his Ithaca Percussion Ensemble was the first such group in the Eastern United States. After serving as music professor and composer in residence at Ithaca College from 1953 to 1967, he joined the faculty of the Eastman School of Music as Professor of Composition. Benson has composed works in every medium. His works are varied and non-doctrinaire in their technique. He has composed over 20 important works for band, including "Dawn's Early Light", "The Leaves are Falling", "The Passing Bell", and "The Solitary Dancer".
