Alan Fernie wurde 1960 im schottischen Bergwerksdorf Newtongrange geboren, wo er in der gleichnamigen Band Posaune spielen lernte. Nach seinem Musikstudium in Glasgow und London spielte er mit den meisten Topbands von Schottland und war Mitbegründer des Caledonian Brass Quintetts, dessen Mitglied er heute noch ist. Alan Fernie lebt heute in Edinburgh, wo er als Lehrer, Juror und Bläser tätig ist. Daneben dirigiert er verschiedene Bands. Seine zahlreichen Kompositionen und Arrangements werden in ganz england und Europa gespielt.

Alan Fernie was born in 1960 in the Scottish mining village of Newtongrange, where he learned the trombone with the local band. After musical studies in Glasgow and London, he played with most of Scotland's top orchestras and co-founded the quintet Caledonian Brass with whom he still plays. He now lives in Edinburgh and is involved in teaching, playing and adjudicating, as well as conducting various bands. His numerous compositions and arrangements are played throughout the U.K. and Europe.
