Wolfgang Schumann wurde am 23. April 1927 in Mönchengladbach geboren. Er studierte an der Hochschule für Musik in Köln die Fächer Dirigieren und Komposition (bei den Professoren Peter Dahm, Hermann Unger und Karl Dammer). Danach war er an den Theatern von Osnabrück, Mannheim, Flensburg und Plauen als Operetten- und Operndirigent tätig, später dann Chefdirigent des Staatlichen Sinfonieorchesters Neubrandenburg, wo er sich insbesondere für zeitgenössische Komponisten einsetzte. Seit 1958 ist Herr Schumann als freischaffender Komponist tätig. Weiterhin war er freier Mitarbeiter des DDR-Rundfunks und Gastdirigent bei den Rundfunkorchestern der DDR. Sein kompositorisches Schaffen umfaßt Kirchenmusiken, Chorwerke, Kompositionen für Sinfonieorchester, Kammermusiken, 25 Ballettkompositionen und ca. 150 Werke für Blasorchester. Wolfgang Schumann ist sehr stark im BORGSDORFER KREIS engagiert und beweist mit seinen Kompositionen, daß auch in Deutschland hervorragende Literatur für sinfonisches Blasorchester geschrieben wird!

Wolfgang Schumann was born in Mönchengladbach on April 23, 1927. He studied the subjects conduction and composition at the college of music in Cologne (his professors being Peter Dahm, Hermann Unger and Karl Dammer). Thereafter he worked at the theatres of Osnabrück, Mannheim, Flensburg, and Plauen as a conductor of operettas and operas, and later became the leading conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra Neubrandenburg, where he committed himself especially to the music of contemporary composers. Since 1958 Mr. Schumann has been working as a freelance composer. He, furthermore, worked as a freelance in GDR broadcasting and as a guest conductor in the broadcasting orchestras of the GDR. His compositional work includes sacred music, choir music, compositions for symphonic orchestras, chamber music, 25 ballet compositions, and about 150 pieces for symphonic bands. Wolfgang Schumann has completely committed himself to the "Borgsdorfer Kreis", and his compositions clearly show that excellent literature for symphonic bands is written in Germany, too.
