Meacham hat oft unter dem Namen von anderen geschrieben und deshalb nie die Anerkennung erfahren, die er verdient hätte. Besonders bekannt wurde er für "American Patrol", doch erst später stellte sich heraus, daß er ein weit größeres Ausmaß an Musik hervorgebracht hat. Bereits als Kind war er von Musik eingenommen und schon bald schrieb er das Lied "Come Over the Sea". Erst mit seinem Stück "Down in the Cotton Fields" erzielte er einen Hit. In der Folge beschäftigte er sich jedoch mehr mit dem Arrangieren als dem Komponieren. Die Mehrzahl seiner Arbeiten waren für Gesang oder Klavier.

Frederick W. Meacham is known principally for his "American Patrol" but he also composed a great deal of other music. He was born in Buffalo, but lived most of his life in Brooklyn, New York. He composed several songs as a young man, but gradually turned his attention toward arranging music of other composers and was considered one of the best band arrangers of his time. He wrote several pieces for the Gillmore Band before composing "American Patrol" in 1885. Most of his later works were for the piano or voice.
