Roger Nixon war der erste Komponist, dem der "Phelan Award" in Musikkomposition verliehen wurde. Zu seinen Werken zählen Chormusik, Lieder, Musik für sinfonische Band, Kammermusik und ein Viola Concerto. Er arbeitete als Musikprofessor an der "San Francisco State University", nachdem er seine musikalische Ausbildung an der "University of California" in Berkeley, abgeschlossen hatte. Zu seinen Lehrern zählten Arnold Schönberg, Ernest Bloch, Frederick Jacobi und viele mehr.

Roger Nixon studied at Modesto Junior College and took clarinet lessons from a former member of the Sousa Band, Frank Mancini. He furthered his education at the "University of California" at Berkeley, receiving a B.A. (1941) and an M.A. (1949) in Composition. Among his teachers were Arthur Bliss, Ernest Bloch, and Arnold Schoenberg. He served on the Modesto College faculty while working on his Ph.D. in Education from 1951-59, and then joined the San Francisco State College teaching staff in 1960. He was elected to the American Bandmasters Association in 1973.
