John Ireland war Komponist, Pianist und Lehrer. Seine sehr englisch geprägte Musiksprache rückt ihn stark in die Nähe Edward Elgars. Sein Werk ist deutlich in der klassischen und romantischen Tradition verwurzelt. Seine musikalische Ausbildung erhielt er am "Royal College of Music". An der "University of Durham" wurde ihm 1932 ein "Honorary Doctorate of Music" verliehen.

John Ireland received his formal musical training at the Royal College of Music, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Durham in 1932. He taught music at the Royal College of Music, and among his more prominent students was Benjamin Britten. His works include music for orchestra, chorus, chamber groups, and brass band.
