Leopold Mozart was an Austrian composer, violinist, music theorist and the father of Wolfgang Amadeus. An excellent musician, he lived in Salzburg and became a member of the Prince Archbishop's orchestra in 1743. After progressing through the ranks as a violinist and teaching violin and keyboard to choirboys at the Cathedral, he eventually became the Vice-kapellmeister. The publication of his violin method in 1756 made him a famous music theorist. He also achieved many successes as a composer, completing symphonies, sacred cantatas, masses, litanies, school drama and secular lieder. However, when Leopold became aware of the talents of his two children, he gave up his own career in order to train and guide them. Leopold became especially dedicated to the success of his child prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus, touring with him and serving as his proof-reader, editor and copyist.
