Martin Ellerby studierte bei Joseph Horowitz, W.S. Lloyd Webber und Wilfred Josephs. Er erhielt den "Arts Council Dio Fund award" für junge Komponisten und den "Allcard award" von der "Worshipful Company of Musicians", sowie zahlreiche fixe Komponistenverträge, verursacht durch viele Auftragswerke. Seine Kompositionen gehen von Arbeiten für Chor, Orchester, Kammerensemble, bis hin zu Stücke für Brassbands und Windensemble. 1988 wurde er zum Musikprofessor des "London College of Music" bestellt.

His range of compositions include works for choir, orchestra, chamber ensembles, brass bands, and wind ensemble, In 1988 he was appointed Professor of Music at the London College of Music.
