Bereits mit 11 Jahren kam der Knabe nach Paris und erhilet an der Ecole Royal de Chant et de Declamation Musikunterricht erhielt. Zuerst wurde Catel durch seine Gelegenheitswerke, die er für die Revolutionsfeierlichkeiten schrieb, bekannt. Später erlangte er Geltung durch seine zahlreichen Bühnenwerke, Opern und dramatische Werke. Bei seinen Freunden und Künstlerkollegen war er nicht nur wegen seiner Begabung, sondern auch wegen seines vornehmen Charakters, sehr beliebt.

He was a French composer and held his first professional post at the age of 14, and in 1790 became the director of the Band of the National Guard. During the French Revolution he was active as a composer of military music and works in celebration of the new regime. He was appointed Professor of Harmony at the Paris Conservatoire when it was founded in 1795. Of his ten operas, "Les Bayadères" (1810) was the most successful.
