1918 beendete Maddy seine Musikerkarriere und wurde Inspektor der Instrumentalmusik im Schulsystem von Rochester, New York. Seine ausgiebige Arbeit mit dem "National Music Camp" in Interlochen ist bekannt geworden und beinhaltete auch das Dirigieren der "National High School Symphony". Er begründete auch das "Interlochen Arts Festival".

In 1918, he abandoned his playing career to become supervisor of instrumental music in the school system of Rochester, New York. Maddy's extensive work with the National Music Camp at Interlochen is well known and included conducting the National High School Symphony and the founding of the Interlochen Arts Festival.
