Additional information: 1869 wurde der Suezkanal und das neue Opernhaus in Kairo – übrigens das erste auf afrikanischem Boden – mit der Oper „Rigoletto“ von Giuseppe Verdi eröffnet. Um das Ansehen des Opernhauses zu steigern, wollte der ägyptische Khedive (Vizekönig) - ein glühender Verehrer Verdis - eine Oper mit ägyptischen Themen bei ihm in Auftrag geben.
Als seine Honorarforderung von horrenden hundertfünfzigtausend Franken anstandslos akzeptiert wurde, komponierte Verdi Aida, nach Entwürfen einer ägyptischen Legende.
Der zeitgenössische, japanische Komponist Toshio Mashima verbindet Elemente der Aida-Oper mit brasilianischen Samba-Klängen, bei denen besonders die Percussiongruppe gefordert wird.
