Vom Leben des Künstlers Adriaen Valerius ist nur wenig überliefert. Als Musiker kennt man ihn heute noch durch eine Sammlung von 79 Liedern, die wohl erst nach seinem Tod im Jahr 1626 zusammengetragen wurden. Für diese Variationsreihe verwendete Philip Sparke die Melodie des Liedes Merck toch hoe sterck, das vom Unabhängigkeitskrieg zwischen Holland und Spanien handelt. Die Melodie des Liedes, das Valerius Comedianten dans nannte, stammt vermutlich von einem alten Seemannslied.
