Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi schrieb in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts vorwiegend geistliche Musik, berühmt wurde er aber schon zu Lebzeiten durch seine Balletti, die er 1591 und 1594 veröffentlichte. Die Tänze waren mit ihren homophonen Strukturen und einfachen Harmonien von einer reizvollen Naivität, die so gut ankam, dass sie schon damals in zehn Auflagen im In- und Ausland gedruckt wurden. Robert van Beringen bearbeitete die Sätze Amor Vittorioso, La Sirena, L’Innamorato und L’ardito für eine fünfstimmig variable Besetzung.
