Additional information: "Danse Macabre op. 40" ist eine kurze Tondichtung von Camille Saint-Saens, die er 1874 zunächst als Lied für Gesang und Klavier komponierte und erst später instrumentierte. Unter den zahlreichen Inspirationsquellen wählte der Komponist das groteske Gedicht von Henri Cazalis, das in Anlehung an Goethes bekannte Ballade eine parodistische Szene beschreibt, worin der Tod auf einem Friedhof eine verstimmte Geige spielt. Die Musik von Sain-Saens hält sich nicht an die gewöhnlichen dämonischen Züge, sondert geht von einer originellen Neuinterpretation von Cazalis aus, um das "Charakteristische" über eine augenzwinkernde, geistvolle Instrumentierung darzustellen.
