Für Old Russian Romances vertiefte er sich in das Studium russischer Volkslieder und wählte schließlich sowohl fröhliche als auch melancholische Melodien aus, die er ideenreich, aber auch mit viel Rücksicht auf die Originale und die typisch russische Atmosphäre, in seinem Werk verarbeitete.
