Additional information: Das Stück Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song basiert auf der Melodie des Volksliedes Suiryo-Bushi, das in der Tradition des japanischen Saiteninstruments Schamisen steht. Es beginnt mit zwei gegensätzlichen Darstellungen der Melodie, gefolgt von verschiedenen Variationen: jede in einem eigenen Stil, aber alle auf der gleichen Melodie oder auf Fragmenten der Melodie beruhend. In einer Variation wird auch die pentatonische Tonleiter verwendet. Im Scherzo, dem Schlussteil des Stückes, erklingt das Volkslied schließlich zum letzten Mal.
